The Silk Road website was an infamous online black market that operated on the dark web between 2011 and 2013. It functioned as an anonymous marketplace where people could buy and sell illegal goods—most prominently drugs—using Bitcoin as the main form of payment. The site relied on Tor for anonymity, which concealed both buyers’ and sellers’ identities, and positioned itself as a kind of libertarian experiment in free trade outside government regulation.
At its peak, Silk Road was the largest and most well-known darknet marketplace, facilitating thousands of transactions across the globe. It became a symbol of both the possibilities of cryptocurrency and the dangers of unregulated online trade. In 2013, the FBI shut the site down, arrested its creator Ross Ulbricht (known online as “Dread Pirate Roberts”), and seized millions in Bitcoin. Its takedown marked one of the first major law enforcement operations against the emerging dark web economy.
